3. Congruence Creates Confidence
Trust isn’t just about showing up consistently. It’s about showing up authentically.
That means your LinkedIn presence must align with the leader you are in real life. When there’s a mismatch, even in subtle ways, it erodes credibility.
👉 If you’re in sales but your network shows only 50 connections, people question your reach.
👉 If you list “attention to detail” as a top skill but your profile is riddled with typos, the message falls flat.
👉 If you hold a senior leadership role but your digital presence is bare, it raises doubts about whether you’re really leading in today’s digital-first world.
These silent signals matter. Research shows that when leaders behave inconsistently, projecting one thing but delivering another, trust plummets. As Haoying Xu and colleagues note in Harvard Business Review, leaders who try to offset bad behavior by being “nice later” actually do more damage to trust than the original behavior itself.¹ Similarly, Frances Frei and Anne Morriss warn that failing to “walk the talk” is among the most common pitfalls that destroy organizational trust.²
The opposite is also true: when your online presence reinforces your offline reputation, confidence grows. Congruence creates confidence.
👉 This week’s #littlelinkedinlesson micro-action: Audit your LinkedIn profile for congruence. Ask yourself: Does this reflect the leader I am today? If not, choose one place (your headline, About section, or Featured content) to bring into alignment.

💬 Afterword: “The leadership pipeline is leaking — and it’s costing organizations their best talent.”
In my Leadership, Seen study, more than half of the senior-level women I surveyed have already stepped out of corporate life into entrepreneurship or consulting. That’s a massive shift of expertise and leadership away from traditional pipelines.
On Wednesday, September 17 at 1:00 p.m. Central, I’ll host an Executive Briefing where I’ll share what these women told us — and what organizations must do next.
