1. Trust Is the Currency of Influence
Since February, I’ve been leading you through a series of conversations about how executives can elevate their presence on LinkedIn. Each month we’ve explored a new theme through five short lessons:
- The Executive Edge (why visibility and influence matter)
- The Influence Shift (how leaders evolve their online presence)
- The Authority Advantage (building credibility and thought leadership)
- The Visibility Spectrum (moving from passive presence to proactive influence)
Now, we turn to the next layer: trust.
🔹 Trust is the currency of influence. Visibility gets you noticed — but trust is what gets you chosen.
🔹 Trust thrives at the intersection of consistency, clarity, and congruence.
And congruence is often where credibility rises or falls. Consider:
- If you’re in sales but have a network of only 50 connections, it undermines the very influence you’re trying to project.
- If you list “attention to detail” as a top skill but your profile is riddled with typos, it sends the opposite message.
- If you hold a leadership role but your digital presence is bare, people may question whether you’re really leading in today’s digital-first world.
These silent signals either strengthen or erode the trust others place in you.
The data are clear:
- The Edelman Trust Barometer reveals that 81% of people consider trust a key factor in their purchasing decisions.
- McKinsey reports that organizations seen as trustworthy enjoy higher growth, loyalty, and advocacy.
Over the next four weeks, we’ll explore how consistency, clarity, and congruence each build trust — and how trust becomes the bridge between being visible and being influential.
👉 This week’s #littlelinkedinlesson micro-action: Review your LinkedIn profile for signals of congruence. Does your presence align with the level of trust you want others to place in you?
Next week: Why consistency creates credibility.
💬 Afterword:
Trust isn’t built on big gestures — it’s earned through the consistent signals of credibility you send every day. On LinkedIn, these signals are embedded in how you show up, the clarity of your message, and the congruence between your words and actions.
To help you assess and strengthen those signals, I’ve created The Executive Influence Checklist™. This checklist distills the core actions and visibility strategies I teach executives in my programs — so you can quickly see where you’re already strong and where a slight shift could amplify your impact.
