4. Strategic Visibility: The Power of Posting with Purpose
Let’s be honest: showing up on LinkedIn just to check a box won’t help you get where you want to go.
If you want your presence to lead to opportunity — especially opportunities like board roles, advisory work, or media visibility — you need to be intentional about how and where you show up.
This fourth article in The Influence Shift series is about putting strategy behind your visibility — so that your efforts on LinkedIn aren’t random, but rather aligned with the kinds of roles and relationships you’re trying to attract.
🎯 Start With the End in Mind
Ask yourself: What do I want to be known for — and by whom?
For example:
I’d like to use my expertise in finance and my experience in the healthcare industry to attract a board position with a mid-sized healthcare tech company.
👥 Know Who You're Trying to Reach
Now, think about who would value that experience:
- Board members in your target industry
- CEOs, CFOs, or GCs of companies at your desired scale
- Search professionals or influencers in your niche
- Thought leaders who shape conversation in your area of expertise
Where are they active?
- Are they posting regularly on their personal profiles?
- Are they engaged in certain LinkedIn groups?
- Are they commenting on content from specific media outlets or industry organizations?
You don’t need to be everywhere. You just need to show up where the right people are already paying attention.
🧠 Show Up with Insight, Not Just Activity
Posting once a week is a great start — but what you say matters more than how often you say it.
Share content that reflects your expertise, your point of view, and your understanding of the issues facing your industry or audience.
Some ways to start:
- Share a trend and offer your perspective on its implications
- Comment insightfully on articles or posts from others — especially those already serving on boards
- Use hashtags or tag relevant organizations to expand your visibility
🤝 Don’t Just Post — Connect
Every time you leave a thoughtful comment or share a relevant post, you’re opening a door. Don’t be afraid to walk through it.
If someone engages with your post or you’ve had a thoughtful exchange in comments, send a personalized invitation to connect.
Example:
“I appreciated your take on X in the discussion thread today — I’d enjoy continuing the conversation. Let’s connect.”
These small, intentional actions build relationships over time — and position you as a peer, not a pitch.

Visibility without purpose is noise. But visibility with intention? That’s influence. Show up where it counts, say what matters, and build the relationships that move you closer to your next opportunity.
