3. From Invisible to In-Demand: How to Be Found for Board Roles
Many accomplished leaders mistakenly believe that if they’re qualified, the right opportunities will find them.
But even the most impressive track record doesn’t guarantee visibility — especially in a digital landscape where you’re competing with algorithms as much as with other candidates.
In this third article in The Influence Shift series, let’s talk about what it really takes to go from being invisible to in-demand — particularly when you’re ready to pursue board service.
There are two critical aspects:
1. 🧠 Get Found in Search: Keyword Strategy Matters
Board search committees and recruiters do use LinkedIn to identify and vet potential board candidates — but they do it through search.
That means your profile needs to be rich in the right language so that you rise to the top when someone searches for expertise like yours.
✅ Start by identifying the words and phrases your ideal audience is likely to search — terms like board-ready executive, corporate governance, ESG, public-private partnerships, terms related to the industry, terms related to your area of expertise (e.g., legal, financial, communications, fundraising), etc.
✅ Then, make sure these keywords show up organically and often throughout your profile:
- In your Headline
- In a well-developed About section (aim for 3–5 strong paragraphs)
- In the text associated with each role in your Experience section
Why does volume of text matter? Because LinkedIn’s algorithm doesn’t rank based on talent — it ranks based on contextual keyword density.
If your About section is two sentences and someone else’s is five well-written paragraphs rich with relevant language, they’ll show up higher in search. Period.
2. 💬 Get Noticed in the Feed: Thought Leadership Counts
Search is only half the equation. To truly be seen as in-demand, you must also demonstrate your thinking in public.
That means:
- Posting content that reflects your board-level perspective
- Commenting meaningfully on the posts of other directors, peers, and industry influencers
- Highlighting interviews, talks, or achievements that showcase your governance expertise and leadership voice
The more consistently you contribute valuable ideas, the more you’ll be seen as someone who belongs in the boardroom — not just someone interested.
3. 📝 Create a Board Bio and Board Resume
Traditional résumés and CVs aren’t optimized for board consideration.
You’ll need to craft a dedicated board bio and a board-specific résumé highlighting your strategic value, governance experience, and cross-sector insight. These documents are often tailored to the priorities of each board — and yes, different boards may require different formats.
Your materials should clearly articulate:
- How you contribute in the boardroom
- The lens you bring (financial, regulatory, innovation, etc.)
- How your background supports oversight and strategic advisement — not just operational excellence
4. 🤝 Build and Nurture Your Network — Online and Off
Many board opportunities are never publicly posted.
While there are directories and recruiter-led opportunities, the most potent catalyst for board service remains relationships — especially with those who are already serving on or connected to boards.
This means:
- Engaging thoughtfully on LinkedIn with board-active professionals
- Following and commenting on board-related conversations in relevant groups
- Attending invite-only or industry events where board members and search professionals gather
Consistent, value-driven engagement builds familiarity — and familiarity breeds trust.
