2. Silent Signals: What Your Profile Says When You're Not Looking
Not everything speaks out loud.
Sometimes, what isn’t said — or what’s said poorly — can quietly undermine your credibility. And nowhere is that more true than in your professional profile.
In this second article of The Influence Shift series, we’re looking at the silent signals your profile sends to people who may be evaluating you for high-impact opportunities: board service, advisory roles, media interviews, or your next leadership move.
The truth? You don’t get to choose when someone checks out your profile. But you do get to control what they find.
Let’s take a closer look at what your profile might be saying — without a single word.
What Are You Really Communicating?
📸 Headshot
Your photo instantly sets the tone. A warm, confident, polished image conveys readiness and presence. But an outdated or casual photo may suggest you're not quite leadership material — or that you don’t understand the stakes of your digital presence.
🖼️ Banner Image
The default grayish-green banner image says: I haven’t thought this through. But not every custom image helps either — especially if it’s cluttered with text, misaligned with your brand, or uses harsh fonts and colors. Choose wisely. This is your personal stage.
🧭 Headline
Using your job title as your headline? That’s LinkedIn’s default — and it says, I didn’t think this was important. A strategic headline communicates your unique value proposition and future direction. It’s not just who you are — it’s how you lead.
🧾 About Section
If your About section is missing, minimal, or vague, the message is: I’m not the leader you’re looking for. This section is your chance to tell your business story with intention — to connect the dots between your experience and the outcomes you want to create next.
💼 Experience Sections
When roles are listed without context, accomplishments, or description, it’s a missed opportunity. Each role should reinforce your leadership narrative: how you solved problems, drove impact, and moved the needle.
🏢 Missing Logos
If a company you worked for is well-known and the logo doesn’t show, it could indicate a spelling error — or worse, inattention to detail. If it’s your company and there’s no logo, the signal is even stronger: I haven’t invested in presenting my business professionally.
🧱 Credibility Markers
Decision-makers look for signs of authority:
- Where you studied
- Organizations you’re affiliated with
- Awards, publications, patents, certifications, even volunteer work
- Recommendations, received and given
These sections may be optional — but silence here can speak volumes.
🔹 #littlelinkedinlesson:
Your profile is always speaking — even when you’re not. Make sure every visual, what you say, and what you leave unsaid is purposeful — reinforcing your authority, presence, and readiness for what’s next.
